[Asia Economy Reporter Kang Wooseok] As COVID-19 cases continue to surge with repeated "doubling" (the number of confirmed cases doubling within a week), an 8-year-old elementary school student in Sejong died just one day after being diagnosed with COVID-19.
According to Sejong City on the 21st, an 8-year-old third-grade elementary school student, A, was confirmed positive for COVID-19 through a rapid antigen test at a local hospital on the 15th.
Afterward, A showed symptoms of high fever and seizures and was transferred to the emergency room of a general hospital. Despite hospitalization, her condition worsened, and she was moved to the intensive care unit early the next morning for treatment but ultimately passed away.
A had no special underlying conditions before testing positive for COVID-19 and was reportedly unvaccinated against COVID-19.
Meanwhile, as the COVID-19 resurgence becomes a reality with over 70,000 new cases reported for two consecutive days on the 20th, the government projected that the number of new confirmed cases could rise to 300,000.
Lee Gi-il, the 1st General Coordinator of the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasure Headquarters (Vice Minister of Health and Welfare), stated at the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasure Headquarters meeting that day, "The number of confirmed cases at the peak is expected to increase to around 300,000."
In response, the government is implementing additional COVID-19 measures, including securing an additional 4,000 hospital beds and expanding temporary screening clinics again.
