[Jeju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Park Chang-won] The "1st Asia Economy Honam·Jeje Ironman Golf Tournament," challenging Korean records, began its 3-day, 198-hole marathon on the 18th at Ora CC in Jeju Island.
The Ironman Golf Tournament is hosted by the Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters and organized by the Jeju Golf Join Club "Jeje Band."
Sponsored by Huion Adelib, the event started with 72 holes at Ora CC on the first day, followed by 54 holes at Booyoung CC on the 19th, and concluded with another 72-hole round at Ora CC on the final day, the 20th.
Over three days, participants will play a total of 45 hours, 11 rounds, and 198 holes, continuously playing during daylight hours for 15 hours each day, representing an extreme challenge to personal limits.
The tournament was scheduled to start at 5 a.m. but was delayed about 20 minutes due to rain, officially opening at 5:20 a.m. with a shotgun start.
A total of 12 teams and 48 players participated, aiming to set the highest official record in the "Longest Time Golf Marathon Team Category" recognized by the Korea Records Institute.
Amid the hot July weather, attention is focused on how many of the 48 challengers will complete all 198 holes.
Among the 48 record challengers, 35 are men and 13 are women. The oldest challenger is Yu Kyung-sun (67), and the oldest female challenger is Hwang Sook-hee (62).
The youngest challenger is 10 years and 7 months old, Oh Sae-hyun, a 4th grader at Daheul Elementary School. He and his father, Oh Young-min (42), applied as a father-son duo, making their completion another point of interest in this tournament.
Alongside the 198-hole Korean record challenge, the tournament is held in a festival format, allowing participants to enjoy golf in various formats ranging from 36 to 108 holes.
On the final day, the 20th, Kim Moo-sung, former leader of the Saenuri Party, and Lee Seung-ah, Chairperson of the Jeju Provincial Council's Culture, Tourism, and Sports Committee, will attend the completion ceremony to congratulate the successful Korean record and present certificates of completion.
A representative of Jeje Band stated, "During the tournament, a total of about 1,600 participants from 400 teams played based on 18-hole units, including 68 players for 54 holes, 32 for 72 holes, and 44 for 108 holes. Among them, 60% were out-of-town tourists, presenting a new paradigm for stay-type golf tourism in Jeju."
Meanwhile, the Korea Records Institute will have record verification officials on-site throughout the three days of the tournament, along with video recording of the matches, to determine the establishment of the highest Korean record. If successful, an official highest record certificate will be awarded on-site to Asia Economy Honam and Jeje Band.
