Comprehensive Inspection Conducted for Larvae Occurrence at Water Purification Plants, Reservoirs, and Major Water Supply Facilities
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Dongguk Lee] Pohang City, Gyeongbuk, recently conducted a comprehensive inspection of water facilities, including 8 water purification plants, 10 water storage tanks, and major water supply facilities, due to growing concerns about the occurrence of larvae in tap water caused by the rainy season and rising raw water temperatures.
After inspecting sedimentation basins, filters, purified water reservoirs, and water storage tanks at the 8 water purification plants, Pohang City confirmed that no larvae were found in any of the water purification facilities. This result comes after the 2020 larvae occurrence incident in tap water in other regions, leading to thorough installation and operation of larvae prevention facilities such as ▲improvements to the under-filter collection devices and addition of air backwash facilities ▲strengthening of filter backwashing ▲injection of sodium hypochlorite before filtration ▲installation of large insect screens on filters ▲and installation of insect traps.
The city has installed a 24-hour larvae monitoring system at the water purification plants to monitor larvae occurrence in real time and plans to shorten the filter backwash cycle further to prevent larvae occurrence.
A Pohang City official stated, “To prevent larvae occurrence caused by insects, we ask households to once again check the sealing condition of rooftop water tanks, and the installation status of insect screens on the entrances and ventilation openings of underground water reservoirs in apartment complexes.”
