The number of new COVID-19 cases on Sunday, the 17th, reached the 40,000 range. Considering that diagnostic testing usually decreases on weekends or holidays, leading to fewer confirmed cases compared to weekdays, this indicates a clear resurgence trend.
The Central Disease Control Headquarters reported that as of midnight on that day, there were 40,342 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total to 18,761,757.
The 'doubling' phenomenon, where the number of new cases doubles within a week, continues. The number of cases on Sunday was the highest in 12 weeks since April 24 (64,696 cases). It is also the first time in 10 weeks that Sunday cases exceeded 40,000 since May 8 (40,046 cases).
The number of new cases on that day was 1.98 times that of a week ago on the 10th (20,397 cases) and 4.02 times that of two weeks ago on the 3rd (10,046 cases). Since the 12th, new cases have been recorded in the high 30,000s to low 40,000s range.
The number of critically ill patients increased by one from the previous day (70) to 71. The number of confirmed cases under home treatment was 219,840, an increase of 22,371 from the previous day (197,469). It is the first time in over two months since May 16 that the number of home-treated cases exceeded 200,000.
The number of COVID-19 deaths reported the previous day was 14, two fewer than the day before (16). The cumulative death toll is 24,742, with a cumulative fatality rate of 0.13%.
The number of confirmed cases by region (including overseas inflow) is as follows: Gyeonggi 11,043, Seoul 8,565, Busan 2,568, Gyeongnam 2,231, Incheon 2,103, Gyeongbuk 1,683, Chungnam 1,520, Ulsan 1,369, Chungbuk 1,279, Jeonbuk 1,245, Daegu 1,176, Daejeon 1,172, Gangwon 1,158, Jeju 1,033, Gwangju 937, Jeonnam 908, Sejong 317, Quarantine 35.
