[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Gwanak-gu (Mayor Park Jun-hee) is accepting nominations for the ‘Gwanak Citizen Award’ until August 24 to discover volunteers who have dedicated themselves to regional development and welfare promotion and to express gratitude.


Celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, the ‘Gwanak Citizen Award’ is given to exemplary citizens of Gwanak-gu who have contributed to fostering a sound civic lifestyle and making their hometown a better place to live.


The award categories include seven fields: ▲filial piety ▲welfare ▲volunteering ▲education ▲culture & arts ▲environment ▲safety. As of the award date, October 15, individuals or organizations who have resided or been active in Gwanak-gu for more than three years and have made special contributions will be selected, with one recipient per category, totaling seven recipients (organizations).


Candidates can be recommended by heads of related institutions and organizations located in Gwanak-gu, school principals, or by more than 30 residents. The final winners will be selected through fact verification of their achievements and deliberation by the award committee. The award ceremony will be held at the opening ceremony of the ‘Gang Gam-chan Festival’ in October.


Submission documents can be downloaded from the Gwanak-gu Office website under News & Notices - Announcements, filled out, and submitted in person at the local community service center of the nominee’s address or mailed to the Gwanak-gu Office’s Autonomous Administration Division. Yongsan-gu (Mayor Park Hee-young) is currently accepting nominations for the ‘29th Yongsan Citizen Award’.


The purpose is to discover proud Yongsan residents who practice love for their community and serve as role models for other citizens.


Nominees must have contributed to citizen harmony and regional development and be residents who have continuously lived in Yongsan-gu for more than five years or organizations or members continuously based in Yongsan-gu. However, for the special award category recognizing extraordinary contributions to the district, there is no residency (location) restriction.


The award categories include nine fields: ▲Good Deeds Volunteer Award ▲Model Family Award ▲Culture & Arts Award ▲Sports Promotion Award ▲Regional Development Award ▲Environmental Protection Award ▲Education Development Award ▲Safety Award ▲Special Award.


Nominations are accepted until August 12. A signed petition by more than 30 residents must be submitted to the local community service center or the Autonomous Administration Division of the district office. Heads of district departments (dong), representatives of related organizations, corporations, school principals, and at least two district council members can also recommend candidates.


There is no residency (location) restriction for the special award. Related forms can be found in the announcements section on the district website.


The district plans to conduct on-site verification of achievements in August and hold the award committee review in September to select approximately one recipient per category.


The awards will be presented on the 29th Yongsan Citizen’s Day (October 18). In accordance with the Public Official Election Act, no separate prize money will be given, but recipients will receive a plaque engraved with their portrait.


Mayor Park Hee-young of Yongsan-gu said, “There are many heroes quietly working to help neighbors and enhance the development and prestige of the region. Such positive influence is the driving force behind the development of the local community. I ask you to actively recommend proud exemplary neighbors around you.”


The Yongsan Citizen Award began in 1994 and has honored 162 citizens through last year. The district has installed a ‘Hall of Fame’ (2.7m high, 7m wide) in the lobby in front of the main hall of Yongsan Art Hall, engraving the names of all past awardees, and provides information on past recipients, including award details and photos, via kiosks.

Nowon-gu (Mayor Oh Seung-rok) announced that it will continue the representative performance of the Nowon Culture & Arts Center, the ‘Music Brunch Concert,’ which has been held for five years.


The concert is titled ‘The 11 o’clock Concert of Three Men.’ The performances will take place on July 20, August 3, and August 17 at 11 a.m. in the main theater of the Nowon Culture & Arts Center, lasting 70 minutes each. The main performers are three artists active not only on stage but also in broadcasting.


Hyunsoo Park, Han Yoon, and Daniel Lindemann will sing, play instruments, and provide commentary to help the audience appreciate the music.


Hyunsoo Park, who recently gained recognition as a classical crossover artist through his appearance on ‘Phantom Singer 3’; pianist Han Yoon, who won a rookie award and was beloved by the public after appearing on ‘We Got Married’; and Daniel Lindemann, a broadcaster and pianist known for his sincere respect for Korean history and culture as a panelist on ‘Non-Summit,’ are the featured artists.


The first concert on July 20, titled ‘Summer Songs,’ will be led by crossover artist Hyunsoo Park. He plans to perform summer-appropriate popular songs accompanied by harmonica and guitar. The program includes songs such as ▲Sung Si-kyung’s ‘First’ ▲Lee Moon-se’s ‘In the Rain’ ▲Yang Hee-eun’s ‘About That Loneliness Called Love’ ▲Kim Kwang-seok’s ‘To You.’


The second concert on August 3, titled ‘Cinema Paradiso,’ will be led by jazz pianist Han Yoon. He will perform OSTs (Original Soundtracks) from dramas and movies he composed, along with improvisations. The program includes OSTs from ▲the drama ‘Sungkyunkwan Scandal’ ▲the drama ‘I Need Romance’ ▲the movie ‘La La Land’ ▲the movie ‘Notting Hill.’


The third concert on August 17, titled ‘Jazz Stories,’ will be led by Daniel Lindemann, better known as a broadcaster, who will appear as a pianist. Since 2017, Lindemann has consistently released jazz original compositions, and he plans to perform his works including ▲The Mirage ▲And She Said Excuse Me ▲Lasting Memory.


Tickets can be purchased on the Nowon Cultural Foundation website and Interpark Ticket. All seats are priced at 15,000 KRW, with a 30% discount available for paid members of the Nowon Cultural Foundation.


Mayor Oh Seung-rok said, “As the summer season arrives, I hope everyone can enjoy a moment of relaxation and healing through these performances amid their tiring daily lives. We will do our best to attract better performances so that residents can enjoy culture in their everyday lives.”
