Lee Jung-jae Nominated for Best Actor
First Non-English and Korean Drama to Achieve This
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heeyoon] Netflix original drama 'Squid Game' has become the first non-English language work to be nominated for the Outstanding Drama Series at the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards (hereafter Emmy Awards).
The Emmy Awards announced the nominees for each category on the morning of the 12th (local time) through their official website and live broadcast.
In this announcement, 'Squid Game' was nominated for the Outstanding Drama Series, the grand prize of the Emmy Awards, for the first time ever for a non-English language drama and the first Korean drama to receive this honor. Actor Lee Jung-jae was also nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.
'Squid Game' will compete against American dramas such as HBO's 'Euphoria,' 'Better Call Saul,' 'Succession,' Netflix's 'OZARK,' Apple TV's 'Severance,' and Showtime's 'Yellowjackets.'
The American entertainment media Variety reported that although 'Squid Game' is a drama produced in Korea, it was able to be nominated for the Emmy Awards because Netflix, headquartered in the United States, produced it with the goal of local distribution.
Previously, in January, 'Squid Game' won the Best Supporting Actor in a TV category for Oh Young-soo at the 79th Golden Globe Awards. Then, at the end of February, at the 28th Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAG Awards), Lee Jung-jae and Jung Ho-yeon won the Outstanding Male and Female Lead Actor awards in a TV Drama Series, along with the TV Comedy/Drama Series Stunt Ensemble award, achieving a triple crown.
Additionally, in March, 'Squid Game' raised expectations for winning an Emmy by winning the Best Foreign Language Drama and Lee Jung-jae winning the Best Actor in a Drama Series at the 27th Critics' Choice Awards.
The Emmy Awards, presented by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in the United States, is the biggest local broadcasting award that evaluates outstanding achievements of those involved in productions. The nominees for the 74th Emmy Awards were finalized at the end of June, and the awards ceremony will be held on September 12 (local time).
