KOTRA Introduces Promising Overseas M&A Opportunities to Domestic Companies

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Sun-mi] On the 7th, KOTRA, together with the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, began supporting about 100 domestic companies interested in overseas mergers and acquisitions (M&A).

The ‘2022 Global M&A Deal Sourcing Plaza’ event was organized to share global M&A trends and present opportunity factors for our companies' overseas M&A amid overlapping domestic and international adversities such as the Russia-Ukraine war and inflation. The event consisted of ▲ ‘Explanation session on global M&A trends and opportunity factors in the era of 3 highs (high inflation, high interest rates, high exchange rates)’ ▲ ‘Overseas M&A success cases and promising listings briefing’ ▲ ‘One-on-one overseas M&A support consultations’.

Speakers known as the top M&A experts in Korea participated. First, Kang Dae-ho, partner at PwC Samil Accounting Corporation, spoke about the global M&A trends of 2022 and presented opportunity factors. Then, Yang Young-hoon, vice partner at Bain & Company, shared the ‘key points’ domestic companies should consider when acquiring overseas companies. Lastly, Ryu Myung-hyun, attorney at Law Firm Sejong, provided guidance on legal matters that our companies should be aware of when acquiring overseas companies.

Success cases of domestic companies’ overseas M&A were shared, and promising overseas listings discovered by KOTRA were introduced. In particular, during the ‘Promising Listings Briefing,’ about 60 listings in the materials, parts, and equipment (SoBuJang), healthcare, ESG sectors, and limited companies located in advanced countries discovered by KOTRA’s overseas M&A base trade offices were introduced, attracting great interest from participating companies. Additionally, time was allocated to resolve difficulties and questions related to overseas M&A with top domestic experts in legal and accounting fields.

Jang Sang-hyun, CEO of KOTRA Invest Korea, stated, “Although capital markets are shrinking amid recent global inflation, this is a good opportunity to acquire overseas companies experiencing capital shortages at low prices,” and added, “We will continue to hold such events regularly to enhance our companies’ understanding of overseas M&A and support them in pursuing overseas M&A as a global growth strategy without hesitation.”
