Changwon Special City Wins Grand Prize at the 17th Korea Environment Awards Changwon Special City, Gyeongnam, won the Grand Prize in the Resource Circulation category at the 17th Korea Environmental Awards Ceremony.

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Song Jong-gu] Changwon Special City in Gyeongnam received the Grand Prize in the resource circulation category at the 17th Korea Environmental Awards ceremony held on the 6th at the DMC Hall in the Small and Medium Business DMC Tower, Sangam-dong, Seoul.

Now in its 17th year, the Korea Environmental Awards are hosted by the Korea Environmental Awards Committee and sponsored by the Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, and Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries.

This award is the most prestigious environmental award in Korea, presented by the Korea Environmental Awards Committee to institutions, local governments, companies, and organizations that have actively made efforts for environmental conservation in various fields such as environment-related management, policy, resource circulation, energy, ecology, marine, and education.

The city, which participated in the public contest last March, underwent a rigorous evaluation process including the first document screening, second on-site inspection, and third comprehensive review by a judging panel composed of external experts including Chairman Lee Gyu-yong, former Minister of Environment.

As a result, the city was honored with the grand prize in recognition of its efforts and excellence in promoting policies to establish a recycling system in the resource circulation sector and to create a sustainable resource circulation society.

Changwon Special City’s establishment of a high-quality recycling system for transparent PET bottles and hosting of fashion shows, use of Changwon Doldol Cup?a reusable shared cup instead of disposable cups, hygienic reuse of waste ice packs, installation of recycling neighborhood yards and AI automatic collection machines have been highly evaluated for spreading citizen participation movements and creating a sustainable resource circulation society through public-private cooperation.

Mayor Hong Nam-pyo stated, “I am honored to receive the resource circulation category award at this Korea Environmental Awards. To protect our precious global environment, resource circulation policies and practices that are sustainable rather than one-time efforts are necessary. Changwon City will continue to strive to become Korea’s leading city in resource circulation.”
