Democratic Party Withdraws '30% Public Opinion Survey Reflection and Regional Voting System' in Party Election Rules (Update)

Party Leader Preliminary Primary Poll to Reflect 30%

[Asia Economy Reporters Oh Ju-yeon and Park Jun-i] The Democratic Party of Korea has finalized on the 6th to hold the preliminary election for the party leader selection in the August party convention with a weighting of '70% Central Committee members and 30% public opinion poll.' The emergency committee's amendment to conduct the vote 100% by Central Committee members was withdrawn, and the party convention preparation committee's proposal was approved, putting an end to internal conflicts over the party convention rules for now. However, for the Supreme Council member election, it was decided to proceed with 100% Central Committee member voting as per the emergency committee's plan.

On the same day, Woo Sang-ho, head of the emergency committee, held a press briefing after the party affairs meeting and stated, "The preliminary election cutoff for the party leader will reflect 70% Central Committee members and 30% public opinion polls, and the preliminary election cutoff for Supreme Council members will be decided solely by Central Committee members' voting."

Additionally, the emergency committee's plan to introduce a two-vote regional voting system in the Supreme Council members' main election was withdrawn.

Chairman Woo explained, "The 'regional voting system' that was to be introduced to reflect regional diversity in selecting Supreme Council members was voluntarily withdrawn at this morning's emergency committee meeting."

He added, "It was recommended to consider the design as a mid-to-long-term task, and the emergency committee voluntarily withdrew it and reported to the party affairs meeting that it will not be introduced immediately."

Chairman Woo said, "We debated for about two hours on how to implement the preliminary election cutoff system," and "finally, the amendment including this resolution was unanimously approved."
