[Gochang=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Jaegil] Gochang-gun, Jeonbuk, is set to actively promote the ‘Sangpo Area Fishing Village New Deal 300 Project,’ which focuses on creating a mudflat foot bath experience center and a carbon-neutral botanical garden.
On the 6th, according to Gochang-gun, a field advisory meeting was recently held at Heungdeok Cultural Welfare Center to establish the basic plan for the ‘Sangpo Area Fishing Village New Deal 300 Project.’
The meeting was attended by 12 people, including five advisory members from the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, three advisory members from the local council, Gochang-gun officials, and representatives from the project contractor, the Korea Fisheries Infrastructure Public Corporation.
On that day, the local conditions were analyzed before establishing the basic plan, covering fisheries and fishing villages, history, culture, tourism, architecture, landscape, and design.
Additionally, by reflecting expert opinions and local residents’ feedback, they discussed a more realistic and rational project plan by introducing differentiated content for the Sangpo area.
The county expects to receive approval for the basic plan from the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries by October.
In November, detailed design services will be conducted, and the full-scale project will begin in May next year, aiming to transform the Sangpo area into a new-concept zone that local residents and tourists can experience.
The ‘Sangpo Area Fishing Village New Deal 300 Project’ will invest approximately 8.2 billion KRW by 2024.
The project will improve the fishing environment by renovating aging ports in Sangpo and Banwol in Buan-myeon, and Hudong, Huseo, and Sapo villages in Heungdeok-myeon. To respond to climate change and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, it will develop a carbon-zero mudflat (Hupo) foot bath experience center, a carbon-neutral botanical garden, a carbon-neutral camping site, eco-friendly parking lots, and remodel village halls.
It is expected to create synergy effects such as local job creation, increased residents’ income, and revitalization of marine tourism.
Shim Deokseop, the governor of Gochang-gun, said, “We will lead the innovative growth of fishing villages by revitalizing fishing village tourism to create a joyful fishing village for fishermen and residents, an attractive fishing village that tourists visit, and a precious fishing village that discovers the value of ordinariness.”
