Busan Waterworks Headquarters Installs Powdered Activated Carbon Injection and Storage Facilities... Producing 'High-Quality Tap Water'!

Advanced Water Purification Facility for Trace Harmful Chemicals to Begin Full Operation from July

Busan Waterworks Headquarters Installs Powdered Activated Carbon Injection and Storage Facilities... Producing 'High-Quality Tap Water'! Powdered activated carbon injection and storage facility.

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Dongguk Lee] The Busan Metropolitan Waterworks Headquarters invested a total project cost of 12 billion KRW (5.4 billion KRW from the national government, 6.6 billion KRW from the city) from April 2019 to June 2022 to install powdered activated carbon injection and storage facilities at Deoksan Water Purification Plant and Hwamyung Water Purification Plant.

This facility is an advanced water treatment facility that injects and stores powdered activated carbon used for ▲removal of trace harmful chemical substances (such as perfluorinated compounds) ▲removal of volatile organic compounds in case of oil pollution accidents in the Nakdong River basin ▲reduction of disinfection by-products generated during chlorine disinfection ▲removal of taste and odor-causing substances originating from algae.

The facility capacity is 560㎥ at Deoksan Water Purification Plant and 370㎥ at Hwamyung Water Purification Plant. Depending on the concentration of trace harmful substances inflowing, powdered activated carbon can be flexibly injected from 1 ppm to 50 ppm, which is expected to greatly contribute to the production of high-quality tap water.

Operations will begin in earnest from July, and the Waterworks Headquarters completed all preparations for emergency powdered activated carbon injection, including automatic interlocking operation and on-site worker training, through a one-month test run (May 16 to June 15).

Park Jin-ok, head of the city’s Waterworks Headquarters, said, “We expect to supply safer and cleaner tap water to citizens by immediately injecting powdered activated carbon to respond to water quality accidents and the inflow of trace harmful chemical substances in the Nakdong River basin.”
