Alcohol Content 14 Degrees... More Than Twice That of Regular Makgeolli
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chun-han] CU announced on the 3rd that it will be the first in the distribution industry to introduce the premium Makgeolli "Baekgeolli," developed by Baeksuldoga, a brewery owned by CEO Baek Jong-won.
Baekgeolli is a Samyangju made using Yesan rice, undergoing three fermentation processes during fermentation and distribution. Compared to regular Makgeolli, which is brewed once, it is brewed multiple times, boasting a deep flavor and smooth finish.
It is a beverage close to the original liquid with minimal water added, with an alcohol content of 14%, more than twice that of regular Makgeolli (about 5-6%). It can be enjoyed in various ways according to preference, such as served straight in a shot glass like a high-proof liquor or diluted with water or ice.
CU is introducing premium Makgeolli as a differentiated product because the MZ generation (Millennials + Generation Z), who seek unique Makgeolli, is increasing. In fact, looking at the sales proportion by age group, the share of people in their 20s increased from 6.1% in the first half of last year to 9.1% this year, and those in their 30s also rose from 9.5% to 14.7%.
A BGF Retail official said, "The MZ generation, who used to express their tastes and individuality through craft beer and wine, has introduced Baekgeolli in line with the trend of purchasing differentiated Makgeolli," adding, "We will continue to expand the lineup of various differentiated products and establish ourselves as a Makgeolli specialty store."
