Police Launch Special Crackdown on Insurance Fraud for 4 Months... Dedicated Investigation Teams Assigned by Metropolitan and Provincial Police Agencies

[Asia Economy Reporter Seongpil Cho] The National Police Agency's National Investigation Headquarters announced on the 3rd that it will conduct a special crackdown on insurance fraud crimes for four months from the 4th of this month to October 31.

During this special crackdown period, the police plan to strongly crack down on various insurance frauds related to public and private insurance. 'Dedicated Insurance Fraud Investigation Teams' will be designated and operated at the Anti-Corruption Economic Crime Investigation Units of each metropolitan police agency. In particular, investigative efforts will focus on organized and malicious insurance frauds such as ▲ insurance fraud linked to public and private insurance including administrator hospitals ▲ insurance fraud involving brokers and hospitals ▲ fraud related to various public insurance such as long-term care insurance and health insurance.

Additionally, in this crackdown, the police plan to enhance fairness through a 'Unified Reception Window System,' where insurance-related investigation requests will be exclusively received by the investigation departments of each metropolitan police agency and assigned to the appropriate investigative units. Furthermore, each metropolitan police agency will hold 'Insurance Fraud Investigation Councils' with related organizations such as the Financial Supervisory Service, Insurance Association, and National Health Insurance Service to share relevant information and strengthen cooperation, thereby improving efficiency.

Previously, the police have been continuously cracking down on insurance fraud crimes. The number of arrests and suspects has been increasing from 1,193 cases and 2,658 people in 2017 to a provisional 3,361 cases and 11,491 people last year. A police official stated, "We will continue to strengthen the police's specialized investigative capabilities against insurance crimes" and "We will also continue efforts to enhance the fairness of investigations."
