[Asia Economy Reporter Yuri Kim] Emart announced that starting July 1, it will reduce prices by 10% on products subject to the government's temporary value-added tax (VAT) exemption policy.
The VAT-exempt items include simply processed food products such as soy sauce, doenjang (fermented soybean paste), gochujang (red chili paste), kimchi, danmuji (pickled radish), and salted seafood, which are sold packaged in vinyl, plastic, or bottles. Approximately 500 products will see price reductions at Emart due to this measure.
In support of the government's price stabilization policy, Emart is holding a discount event from June 30 to July 13, offering up to 50% off on representative products such as jang (fermented sauces), kimchi, and salted seafood that are VAT-exempt. For example, Cheongjeongwon Taeyangcho Chal Gochujang 2.5kg is 50% off, Cheongjeongwon Haetsal Dameun Jinganjang Gold 1.7L is offered as a 1+1 deal, and CJ Haechandle Traditional Doenjang 500g is 50% off when purchasing two.
Emart is also running a discount event on Canadian pork, which is subject to a 0% tariff under the quota system. Previously, Canadian pork was subject to an 8.6% tariff, but from the customs clearance on June 23, the quota tariff of 0% has been applied. Emart has prepared 50 tons of Canadian chilled pork belly and neck meat for a three-day sale until July 2, offering about a 30% discount when using Shinsegae Points (limited to 1kg per person).
From July 3, when the event ends, Emart will sell these products at prices approximately 10% lower than the regular price. By simplifying the distribution structure through direct transactions with suppliers in Canada, Emart plans to continuously stabilize prices and hold monthly promotional events for Canadian pork.
Choi Jin-il, Head of Grocery at Emart, said, "We are conducting discount events on representative items with VAT exemption and 0% quota tariffs to participate in stabilizing essential goods prices," adding, "We will continue to devise and implement various measures to reduce the burden on customers' shopping baskets."
