[Asia Economy Reporter Jang Hyowon] The heavy rain falling in the central region is expected to continue until tomorrow morning. After the rain clears, a heatwave is anticipated.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration on the 30th, as of 4 PM, rain is pouring heavily at a rate of 30mm per hour in the Seoul metropolitan area. Since 3 PM the previous day until now, Seoul has received 159.8mm of rain. Dobong-gu recorded a cumulative rainfall of 196.5mm, approaching 200mm.
In Gyeonggi Province, Tanhyeon-myeon in Paju City and Hwaseong City received 248.5mm and 240mm of rain respectively. Suwon City recorded 236.3mm, and Yongin City 225.5mm of rainfall. Seosan City in Chungnam Province experienced nearly 300mm with 279.5mm of rain. Dangjin City and Taean County recorded 246.5mm and 173.5mm respectively.
In Gangwon Province, heavy rain fell in Cheorwon-gun (Dongsong-eup, 153.5mm) and Chuncheon City (Nami Island, 146.5mm).
The Korea Meteorological Administration forecasts an additional 30 to 80mm of rain until tomorrow in Seoul, Incheon, northern Gyeonggi, central inland Gangwon, northern inland Gangwon, and Gangwon mountain areas (with more than 120mm in some parts of Seoul, Incheon, and northern Gyeonggi). Especially, very heavy rain of 30 to 50mm per hour is expected in areas centered on Seoul, Incheon, northern Gyeonggi, and northwestern Gangwon Yeongseo.
Besides the monsoon rain, showers are expected due to atmospheric instability caused by rising daytime temperatures.
In southern Gyeonggi, southern Gangwon, Chungcheong, and southern regions, showers accompanied by gusts, thunder, and lightning are expected until night on the 30th. In southern inland Gangwon, Gangwon mountain areas, southeastern inland Chungnam, and inland Gyeongsang, showers of 5 to 40mm (with more than 60mm in some places) are expected from late afternoon to evening tomorrow.
Overnight, the east coast, Jeju coast, Chungcheong, and southern inland areas may experience tropical nights with minimum temperatures above 25 degrees Celsius from 6:01 PM to 9 AM the next day.
Tomorrow, the perceived temperature will exceed 33 degrees Celsius during the day, especially in central and southern Gangwon Yeongdong, Chungcheong, southern regions, and Jeju. Some areas in North Gyeongsang will see perceived temperatures soaring above 35 degrees Celsius, making it very hot.
Heatwave warnings have already been issued for these areas.
Although the central region had relatively low temperatures due to the monsoon rain, the stationary front is moving northward and the area is entering the edge of the North Pacific High, causing daytime temperatures to rise enough to issue heatwave warnings.
Tomorrow’s morning minimum temperatures are expected to be between 21 and 25 degrees Celsius, and daytime maximum temperatures between 28 and 35 degrees Celsius.
Expected minimum and maximum temperatures in major cities are: Seoul 24°C and 31°C, Incheon 23°C and 29°C, Daejeon and Gwangju 24°C and 33°C, Daegu 25°C and 35°C, Ulsan 23°C and 33°C, and Busan 24°C and 29°C.
