[Asia Economy Sejong=Reporter Dongwoo Lee] Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) announced on the 29th that it has pledged comprehensive cooperation with KNPP, the new nuclear power plant contractor in Kazakhstan, for the introduction of new nuclear power plants.


The two companies signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to cooperate in areas such as new nuclear power plant development, application of nuclear technology, workforce training, and local community acceptance. The event was attended by the CEO of KNPP and the Deputy Minister of Energy of Kazakhstan, who visited Korea to inspect the nuclear power industry.


KNPP has been evaluating the feasibility of constructing nuclear power plants in Kazakhstan since September last year, following the will of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. They are also preparing to submit a proposal for the construction of two new nuclear power plants with a total capacity of up to 2,800 MW to the president by the third quarter of this year. The new plants are scheduled to begin construction in 2029 and be completed by 2035.


KHNP has maintained continuous cooperation since submitting price and technical proposals for the construction of two nuclear power plants with capacities of 1,000 MW and 1,400 MW respectively to KNPP in 2019.


KHNP stated, "With the signing of this memorandum of understanding, cooperation between the two companies for the introduction of new nuclear power plants in Kazakhstan is expected to accelerate further."
