Incheon City Bus Free Wi-Fi Upgraded to 5G

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] 5G service has been provided on Incheon city buses, resulting in faster free Wi-Fi speeds for passengers.

Incheon City announced on the 29th that starting from the 1st of next month, 5G free Wi-Fi service will begin on 271 city buses.

The buses include a total of 271 vehicles on 15 routes: 2, 2-1, 8, 10, 11, 15, 16-1, 28, 29, 45, 72, 80, 87, 300, and Express 95.

With the transition from the existing LTE-based service to 5G, which is three times faster, communication speeds will significantly improve to 300~400Mbps.

Passengers can choose between an open network (PublicWifi@Free) and a secured network requiring an ID and password (PublicWifi@Secure) for the bus Wi-Fi 5G service.

The city plans to replace all 2,467 buses based in Incheon with 5G service, starting with 271 buses next month, 1,629 buses in January next year, and 567 buses in November 2024.

An Incheon city official stated, "Although public Wi-Fi had been installed on buses, the equipment had become outdated due to exceeding its durability period, causing inconvenience for users. With the improvement to 5G service, we expect it will help reduce passengers' communication costs as well as bridge the information gap."
