[Asia Economy Reporter Seongpil Cho] The National Police Agency announced on the afternoon of the 28th that it held a video conference attended by police leadership nationwide.
The meeting, chaired by Deputy Commissioner Yoon Hee-geun, was described by the National Police Agency as a routine meeting to share regional issues following personnel changes among commanders such as city and provincial police chiefs. The meeting was originally scheduled for the previous day but was postponed by one day due to factors including Police Commissioner Kim Chang-ryong’s resignation announcement.
During the meeting, the police leadership reportedly discussed preparations for the nationwide labor rally of 70,000 participants scheduled for the 2nd of next month. The Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) plans to hold the main rally from 3 p.m. for one hour at Seoul Plaza, centered around Sejong-daero and Eulji-ro, with 30,000 participants aiming to march to Samgakji Rotary near the Yongsan Presidential Office.
The police established response policies including strict action against illegal activities, active blocking of acts that disrupt the functions of key facilities, and minimizing traffic and citizen inconvenience. They decided to mobilize the nationwide situation management permanent units (up to 140 companies) to the fullest extent. They are also preparing to mobilize emergency units in Seoul and the metropolitan area.
Additionally, the police reportedly shared updates on the progress and response plans regarding the Ministry of the Interior and Safety’s police system reforms. Regarding measures such as the establishment of new police organizations by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, the police are operating a "Police System Development Task Force" involving key bureau chiefs and are intensively reviewing ways to consult with the ministry to ensure the police perspective is fully reflected through multiple channels.
The meeting also reviewed preparations for the amended Military Court Act, which will take effect on the 1st of next month, and shared information on measures to reduce traffic accident fatalities in the second half of the year and the progress of comprehensive plans to eradicate telephone financial fraud.
