Video Call with General Paul Quilino, US Indo-Pacific Command Commander
[Asia Economy Yang Nak-gyu, Military Specialist Reporter] On the 28th, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Won In-chul discussed the security situation on the Korean Peninsula via video call with U.S. Indo-Pacific Command Commander John C. Aquilino.
According to the Joint Chiefs of Staff on the day, Chairman Won and Commander Aquilino agreed that "North Korea's successive missile launches and preparations for nuclear tests pose a threat that undermines peace and stability not only on the Korean Peninsula but also in the Indo-Pacific region."
Chairman Won and Commander Aquilino evaluated that "the combined defense posture of the ROK-U.S. alliance, prepared for North Korea's additional intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) launches and nuclear test provocations, is stronger than ever, and the alliance is fully prepared to respond to any provocations from North Korea."
Commander Aquilino expressed gratitude to Chairman Won for his outstanding leadership contributing to regional peace and stability and his dedication to the development of the ROK-U.S. alliance and combined defense posture. In response, Chairman Won called Commander Aquilino a "true friend and comrade" and asked him to continue efforts to strengthen the ROK-U.S. alliance and combined defense posture.
The government designated Kim Seung-gyeom (59, 42nd class of the Korea Military Academy), then Deputy Commander of the ROK-U.S. Combined Forces Command, as the new Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff on the 25th of last month and has submitted the personnel hearing request to the National Assembly.
