[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Hwang Du-yeol] On the afternoon of the 27th, Pukyong National University began the ‘2022 Academic Year Deep-Sea (Coastal) Boarding Practice’ at the Yongho Bay reclamation pier near the Daeyeon Campus.
Pukyong National University's deep-sea boarding practice is a maritime and fisheries talent development program with a 66-year tradition, first started in Korea when 48 students, including Kim Jae-cheol, Honorary Chairman of Dongwon Group, advanced to Keelung Port, Taiwan in 1957.
Until 2019, Pukyong National University conducted deep-sea boarding practices calling at ports in China, Japan, Russia, and other countries annually, but in 2020 and 2021, due to COVID-19, the boarding practice was operated without calling at any ports.
This year, the boarding practice will be conducted mainly along the domestic coast, calling at domestic ports.
A total of 96 participants, including 63 students from the Department of Marine Production System Management and the Mechanical Systems Engineering major, instructors, and crew members, will participate in the boarding practice.
The students, instructors, and crew members will board Baekgyeongho, the largest domestic fisheries training vessel newly commissioned last year, departing from Busan on the 27th, calling at Incheon, Mokpo, and Jeju, and returning to Busan on the 26th of next month, conducting a 30-day boarding practice.
During the practice period, Pukyong National University students will train in the East Sea, West Sea, and South Sea areas, learning fishing operations, navigation, electronic communication operation, ship engine operation, automatic control system operation, ship stability, pollution prevention, and other STCW international convention-based training courses for navigators and engineers on site at sea.
At each port of call, they plan to engage in exchange activities such as benchmarking by visiting maritime and fisheries-related universities and public institutions.
Pukyong National University implemented quarantine measures to prevent COVID-19 infection, conducted pre-COVID-19 tests, weekly self-testing for all boarding participants, and commenced the boarding practice on the 27th without a separate departure ceremony.
