[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] Tropical nights occurred for two consecutive days in Seoul, Daejeon, Gwangju, and other areas. Typically starting in July, tropical nights have begun to intensify from June this year.

On the 28th, the Korea Meteorological Administration announced that as of 6 a.m., the lowest temperatures recorded at locations experiencing tropical nights were Seoul 25.8°C, Suwon 27.7°C, Cheongju 28.2°C, Daejeon 27.4°C, Sejong 27.3°C, Gwangju 25.8°C, Jeonju 27.3°C, and Jeju 28.9°C.

Warm and humid southwesterly winds flowed in, and cloudy weather prevented temperatures from dropping, resulting in many places experiencing tropical nights overnight. A tropical night is defined as when the lowest temperature between 6 p.m. and 9 a.m. remains at or above 25°C.

Across the country, many locations set new records for the highest minimum temperature in June for two consecutive days. As of 6 a.m., temperatures were Paju 25.5°C, Wonju 27.4°C, Yeongwol 25.3°C, Chuncheon 24.8°C, Chungju 27.1°C, Gunsan 26.8°C, Andong 26.1°C, Changwon 24.8°C, Busan 23.5°C, and Gosan 24.2°C.

Tropical nights are expected to continue for the time being, mainly along parts of the East Coast, Jeju Island coast, some areas in the Chungcheong region, and the southern inland.

With the first-ever occurrence of tropical nights in June in Seoul, Daejeon, Suwon, and other areas, previous records have been broken. In Seoul, the first tropical night last year occurred on July 12, which is 16 days later than this year. Last year, Seoul experienced tropical nights for a total of 21 days, including 14 days in July and 4 days in August.

The regions recording their first June tropical nights this year include Seoul, Wonju, Suwon, Daejeon, Gunsan, Mokpo, Boryeong, Buyeo, Chuncheon, and Cheongju.

Since the expansion of the meteorological observation network in 1973, the national average annual number of tropical nights is 5.7 days. From 1973 to 1980, the average was 4.2 days per year, and from 2011 to 2020, it was 9 days per year. The average number of tropical nights by month is 2.8 days in July, 3.6 days in August, and 0.1 days in September.
