Global Trends in Traditional Medicine and Directions for the Advancement of Korean Medicine
[The Asia Business Daily Yeongnam News Bureau, Reporter Yeo Jonggu] The National Institute for Korean Medicine Development will operate the "Korean Medicine Academy" starting in June 2022 to strengthen its capacity for developing Korean medicine policies.
The Korean Medicine Academy is a monthly event that has been reorganized from the 2021 Korean Medicine Policy Forum and the 2022 Korean Medicine Standard Clinical Practice Guideline Development Project Group’s Korean Medicine Clinical Research Academy. It will be conducted in various formats, including special lectures, forums, expert seminars, invited lectures by distinguished speakers, and panel discussions. The academy aims not only to develop Korean medicine policy but also to promote convergence and innovation with related fields, taking a multidisciplinary approach that encompasses natural sciences and humanities and social sciences beyond the field of Korean medicine.
The first session of the Korean Medicine Academy, under the theme "Outcomes of the WHO/WPRO Visit to Strengthen International Cooperation in Korean Medicine and Directions for the Advancement of Korean Medicine," will be held at 3:50 p.m. on June 28 in the seminar room of the Seoul branch of the National Institute for Korean Medicine Development.
A government delegation, led by Kang Minkyu, Director of the Korean Medicine Policy Division at the Ministry of Health and Welfare, recently visited international organizations and related institutions involved in Korean medicine, including the headquarters of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva, Switzerland, and the WHO Western Pacific Regional Office (WPRO) in Manila, Philippines.
The government reviewed the achievements of ongoing cooperation, such as the dispatch of Korean technical officers to WHO/WPRO and the designation of the National Institute for Korean Medicine Development as a WHO Collaborating Center for Traditional Medicine. Discussions were held on strengthening ongoing cooperation in the following areas: ▲ formulation and implementation of WHO strategies related to traditional medicine ▲ implementation of WPRO’s new regional framework for traditional medicine ▲ integration, standardization, and accumulation of evidence for traditional medicine within national health systems.
At the first session of the Korean Medicine Academy, Lim Suhyeon, Deputy Director of the Korean Medicine Industry Division at the Ministry of Health and Welfare, will give a presentation on "Outcomes of the WHO and WPRO Visits."
Jung Changhyun, President of the National Institute for Korean Medicine Development, stated, "Through the Korean Medicine Academy, we will enhance our ability to plan, manage, and operate policies related to Korean medicine and healthcare, and not only develop policies for the field of Korean medicine as a whole but also strengthen policy promotion within the institute, across the broader medical community, and to the public."
