[Asia Economy Reporter Kwak Min-jae] Minister of the Interior and Safety Lee Sang-min will announce plans to strengthen police control on the 27th.
According to the Ministry of the Interior and Safety on the 26th, Minister Lee plans to hold a briefing at 11 a.m. on the 27th at the annex of the Government Seoul Office to present the ministry's stance on the recommendations of the "Police System Improvement Advisory Committee" and future implementation plans.
At this briefing, Minister Lee is expected to reveal the ministry's plans regarding the establishment of a police command organization, commonly referred to as the "Police Bureau," and the enactment of command regulations by the Minister of the Interior and Safety over the Commissioner General of the National Police Agency. Since the establishment of the organization responsible for police affairs requires a revision of the Presidential Decree and the command regulations are under the Ministry's ordinance, it is anticipated that these measures could be implemented as early as next month.
Earlier, the advisory committee, formed under Minister Lee's directive, announced recommendations on the 21st outlining measures to control the expanded powers of the police following the adjustment of investigative authority.
