[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Myunghwan] Following Singapore and Korea, Taiwan has reported the third case of monkeypox in Asia.

Local Taiwanese media reported on the 24th that health authorities confirmed a student who arrived from Germany on the 20th as a monkeypox patient.

The patient exhibited symptoms such as fever, sore throat, muscle pain, and skin rash. Authorities stated they are monitoring the health status of five medical personnel who had close contact with the patient.

Monkeypox has been spreading worldwide since the first case was reported in the UK on the 7th of last month, reaching Europe, North America, the Middle East, and Australia.

On the 23rd (local time), WHO held an emergency meeting under the International Health Regulations (IHR) to consider declaring monkeypox a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC). PHEIC is the highest level of alert issued by WHO for diseases with global outbreaks. Currently, PHEIC applies to two diseases: COVID-19 and poliomyelitis (polio).
