[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Seongdong-gu (Mayor Jung Won-oh) completed the replacement of the arcade roof at Majang Livestock Market on the 21st, creating a safe and pleasant market environment.
Through this construction, the roofing material covering a length of 571m and an area of 3,986㎡ connecting the market’s south, west, and north gates was completely replaced.
The old, deteriorated arcade roof was dismantled and newly installed with a 16-ton double-layer panel for enhanced strength, raising the ceiling height by about 1 meter to secure natural lighting. The higher ceiling also increased airflow from outside, strengthening ventilation under the arcade.
Drainage facilities were significantly improved by repairing and adding eaves gutters in leak-prone sections. Corrosion removal and repainting of the existing steel frame were thoroughly carried out, and the existing emergency exit guidance lights were replaced with highly visible emergency exit signs to ensure safety in case of fire.
This project was carried out after securing a total budget of 1.5 billion KRW through the ‘2021 Seoul Metropolitan Government Traditional Market Facility Modernization Support Project’ competition, actively reflecting the opinions of market merchants.
After a separate design service, construction began at the end of January this year and was carried out over about six months. The project was safely completed, and a completion ceremony was held with the Majang Livestock Market Merchants Association, related parties, and residents.
Majang Livestock Market covers an area of 116,150㎡ with about 2,000 stores, handling over 60% of livestock product distribution in the metropolitan area. It is a representative wholesale and retail livestock market and a famous spot in Seongdong with over 2 million annual visitors.
Earlier in November, Seongdong-gu enacted and promulgated an ordinance on environmental improvement around Majang Livestock Market, systematically addressing odor reduction and other environmental improvements. Following the completion of the arcade replacement, the district plans to continue focusing on improving the facilities and environment of Majang Livestock Market.
Park Jae-hong, Chairman of the Majang Livestock Market Merchants Promotion Cooperative, said, “We are grateful for the convenience facilities provided for customers and merchants with better lighting and ventilation.” He added, “We merchants will do our best to provide high-quality services to satisfy customers visiting the traditional market.”
Jung Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, said, “Majang Livestock Market is a key supplier of food in the metropolitan area.” He added, “We will continue to actively work to ensure that merchants and local residents can use the market comfortably with modernized facilities.”
