[Asia Economy Reporter Kang Nahum] The groundbreaking ceremony for the country's first semiconductor industrial complex, the Gyeonggi 'Yongin Semiconductor Cluster,' is expected to be held next month.
According to the semiconductor industry on the 22nd, the groundbreaking ceremony for the Yongin Semiconductor Cluster is expected to take place around mid-next month, attended by SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won, government officials, and key local government representatives. This marks the first major groundbreaking in three years since the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced the 'Semiconductor Specialized Cluster Development Plan' in 2019.
The Yongin Semiconductor Cluster is a project to establish a next-generation memory production base on 4.15 million square meters in the Yongin General Industrial Complex, covering Doksong, Godang, and Jukneung-ri areas in Wonsam-myeon, Cheoin-gu, Yongin City.
SK Hynix plans to invest approximately 120 trillion won to develop the semiconductor production complex here. The first phase fab (factory) is scheduled to break ground in early 2025, with mass production starting in 2027. In the mid to long term, the plan is to build a total of four semiconductor factories within the Yongin industrial complex.
In addition to SK Hynix, more than 50 materials, parts, and equipment companies will be located in the Yongin Semiconductor Cluster.
Earlier, the Yongin General Industrial Complex submitted a construction notification to Yongin City in April.
