[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Duyul] Busan Port Authority (BPA) has introduced two 'Alternative Maritime Power (AMP) connection cables' at Busan New Port for the first time in Korea.
The connection cables are 60 meters long. They allow convenient use of shore power by connecting the ship's own power cable even when the ship is berthed away from the AMP installed at the pier.
BPA has been installing AMP facilities since 2018 to reduce air pollutants emitted from engines using bunker fuel while ships docked at the pier are unloading cargo.
Currently, eight AMP facilities are installed at four berths of Piers 3 and 4 at Busan New Port.
However, due to frequent changes in ship arrival schedules caused by the global logistics crisis from the COVID-19 supply chain disruptions, ships had difficulties using shore power if they could not berth at locations equipped with AMP facilities.
Kang Jun-seok, President of BPA, said, “By introducing the 60-meter connection cables, shore power can be supplied to ships regardless of their berthing position, which will activate AMP usage among shipping companies using Busan Port and greatly contribute to reducing air pollutants.”
