[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunjin Jeong] Big tech companies such as Meta, the parent company of Facebook, and Microsoft (MS) have formed a metaverse-related technology standards consortium, IT media TechCrunch reported on the 21st (local time).

According to the report, these companies announced the establishment of the "Metaverse Standards Forum" on the same day, stating that major companies active in the metaverse field, ranging from technology standardization organizations like the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) to chip manufacturers and game companies, will participate.

The consortium includes Meta, MS, Epic Games, Adobe, Nvidia, Sony, and others. However, some companies offering metaverse-related products and services, such as Apple, Roblox, Snapchat, and Niantic, were excluded.

Neil Trevett of semiconductor chip manufacturer Nvidia, who chairs the consortium, said, "The goal is to facilitate communication among various standards organizations and companies to enable information interoperability between technologies and devices in the real world within the metaverse domain." He added, "Any company is welcome to join," and according to foreign media, he did not make any particular remarks on how Apple's absence might affect the consortium's goals.
