[Asia Economy Reporter Kiho Sung] Hyundai Mobis has become the first company in the domestic automotive industry to be recognized as a ‘Zero Waste to Landfill’ site by an international verification organization. The Zero Waste to Landfill verification evaluates the level of waste recycling at a business site and assigns a grade accordingly.

On the 15th, Hyundai Mobis announced that its Changwon plant, which produces automotive brake systems, received the ‘Zero Waste to Landfill’ verification from UL, an international safety verification testing organization. This is the first case in the domestic automotive industry. The Changwon plant of Hyundai Mobis was certified with a waste recycling rate of 96.8%, earning a ‘Gold’ grade.

UL assigns grades based on the proportion of waste reused as resources at the business site: Silver (90?94%), Gold (95?99%), and Platinum (100%).

According to Hyundai Mobis, the Changwon plant recycled 2,871 tons out of a total of 2,967 tons of waste generated at the site last year. Waste paper, scrap metal, and waste synthetic resins were reused as raw materials or fuel, thus being recycled as resources.

Starting with the Zero Waste verification of the Changwon plant, Hyundai Mobis plans to continuously improve the recycling rates of all 64 domestic and overseas business sites. Currently, the overall waste recycling rate of Hyundai Mobis’s business sites is below 70%. Hyundai Mobis aims to raise this rate to 90% by 2025, striving to achieve Zero Waste to Landfill certification at all domestic and international sites.

Due to the nature of the automotive industry, a representative manufacturing sector, resource recycling is not easy. However, Hyundai Mobis is strengthening its resource circulation efforts by monitoring the entire waste process from generation to transportation and disposal. The company also continuously manages whether entrusted waste disposal companies are properly handling the waste.

Meanwhile, to realize the fundamental goal of carbon neutrality, Hyundai Mobis plans to convert 100% of the electricity consumed at all domestic and overseas business sites to renewable energy by 2040.
