[Asia Economy Reporter Kang Woo-seok] Microsoft (MS) in the United States is ending support for Internet Explorer.
According to foreign media reports including The Economic Times on the 14th (local time), MS will end support for the Internet Explorer 11 browser version starting from the 15th of this month. This comes 27 years after its initial release as an add-on package for the Windows 95 operating system in 1995.
After the end of support, Internet Explorer installed on PCs will be disabled, and when launched, it will automatically switch to MS's other web browser, Edge.
However, the 'Internet Explorer mode' in Edge, which is based on Internet Explorer, is expected to be available until 2029.
MS had already stopped developing new features for Internet Explorer in 2016 when it launched the new web browser, Edge.
Internet Explorer was once renowned as the most widely used web browser worldwide, but its usage declined as competing browsers emerged and with the advent of the smartphone era.
