Germany, Spain, and Others Begin Ordering Vaccines Independently
[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunju Lee] The European Union (EU) executive body, the European Commission, signed an agreement on the 14th (local time) with Danish biotechnology company 'Bavarian Nordic' to supply 110,000 doses of monkeypox vaccine.
According to local media, Stella Kyriakides, the EU Commissioner for Health, stated that the vaccines will be purchased using EU funds and delivered to member states.
Delivery will begin immediately and is expected to be completed within a few months.
The European Commission reported that around 900 cases of monkeypox infections have been reported in 19 member states as well as Norway and Iceland.
Bavarian Nordic's smallpox vaccine is approved in the EU as a smallpox vaccine but has not yet been authorized for monkeypox use. In the United States, it has been approved for monkeypox as well.
Some EU member states, including Germany and Spain, are known to have already placed their own orders for the monkeypox vaccine.
