[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Gyumin] Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament, has strongly expressed support for Ukraine's EU membership.

According to major foreign media on the 10th (local time), Metsola stated at the Democracy Summit in Copenhagen, Denmark, “The European Parliament firmly supports Ukraine obtaining candidate status for EU membership.”

She continued, “Ukraine is already part of the European family,” and urged EU member states, saying, “(Granting Ukraine candidate status for EU membership) strengthens Europe as much as it strengthens Ukraine.”

The Ukrainian government hopes that Ukraine's candidate status for EU membership will be approved at the EU summit scheduled for the 23rd to 24th.

Although it usually takes several years from applying for EU membership to obtaining candidate status, many EU member states are reportedly supporting the immediate granting of candidate status considering Russia's invasion of Ukraine. However, some countries, including Germany, are known to have a more cautious stance on this matter.
