Today's Snack Is You
If you want to have a glass of beer but don't have any decent snacks, open the cupboard and take out some ramen. Crushed noodles with the soup powder, known as 'raw ramen,' can also be a great snack. It's very simple to make, and the salty flavor of the soup makes the beer go down smoothly. For your enjoyable solo drinking time, we introduce four types of ramen that taste better when eaten as raw ramen rather than boiled.
Shin Ramyun
Shin Ramyun is characterized by its spicy and stimulating flavor. The noodles are crispy like snacks, making it one of the delicious ramens when eaten raw. Since the soup is quite spicy, it is recommended to break the noodles into large pieces and dip them into the soup. If you like to crush the noodles finely and eat them with a spoon, it's better to add only half the soup powder. It's also GOOD to dip it in mayonnaise!
JMT Beer Pairing | Light wheat beers that go down smoothly, such as Cass White and Jeju Wit Ale, pair well.
Anseongtangmyun
Anseongtangmyun, nicknamed 'paper-like ramen,' has a savory soup flavor and thin noodles, making it perfect for eating as raw ramen. Although it is quite salty, the slightly nutty taste similar to ssamjang (fermented soybean paste) is the charm of Anseongtangmyun raw ramen. However, since the powdered soup contains small pieces of dried seaweed, it is not recommended for those who want a clean raw ramen without any toppings.
JMT Beer Pairing | Try sweet beers like FIZZ pear flavor or Magnus, which are not strongly bitter.
Jin Ramyun (Mild)
Jin Ramyun Mild is as divisive as mint chocolate. The editor usually prefers the spicy flavor but chooses the mild version when eating raw ramen. Raw ramen made with Jin Ramyun Mild has less tingling spiciness and tastes salty and savory like a snack. The soup itself is not overly stimulating and tastes like seasoning sprinkled on snacks, so it is not overwhelming. Compared to other ramens, the noodles are slightly soggy, so microwaving or air frying for about 5 minutes and then cooling it down makes it taste better.
JMT Beer Pairing | Beers with strong carbonation and refreshing styles like Tsingtao and Tiger Beer pair well.
Samyang Ramen
Raw ramen made with Samyang Ramen tastes like powdered army stew. The spiciness is not very strong, so the ham flavor of the powder soup is well perceived, which is a characteristic of Samyang Ramen. Due to the unique aroma of ham, it is slightly greasy compared to the ramens introduced earlier, but it pairs excellently with refreshing and clean beers.
JMT Beer Pairing | Capri, Corona, etc. might be a bit bland, but we recommend pairing with beers that have a clean throat feel and aftertaste!
