Gyeongnam Province Holds Memorial Day Ceremony at Changwon Chung-hon Tower ... Governor-Elect Park Wan-su Pays Tribute at 3·15 Cemetery Acting Governor Ha Byung-pil of Gyeongnam Province and others are honoring the patriotic martyrs at the Memorial Day ceremony on the 6th.

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Seryeong] On June 6, Memorial Day, Gyeongsangnam-do held a commemorative ceremony at the Chung-hon Tower in Changwon City.


Memorial Day is a national holiday designated in 1956 to honor not only the Korean War veterans but also all the patriots who sacrificed their lives to protect the country.


The 67th Memorial Day commemorative ceremony was held in the order of a moment of silence for the patriotic martyrs and national heroes, the national anthem, flower offering and incense burning, commemorative speeches, poetry reading, and singing of the Memorial Day song, all timed with the moment of silence siren sounded simultaneously nationwide at 10 a.m.


About 1,000 people attended, including bereaved family representatives such as Yoon Jeong-o, head of the Gyeongnam branch of the Association of Families of the War Dead, and Choi Jeong-hee, head of the Gyeongnam branch of the Widows of War Veterans Association; Ha Byeong-pil, acting governor of the province; Kang Ki-yoon, member of the National Assembly; Kim Ha-yong, chairman of the provincial council; Park Jong-hoon, elected superintendent of Gyeongnam Education Office; heads of local institutions and veterans organizations; and residents of the province.


Acting Governor Ha Byeong-pil said, “It is our duty to remember the noble sacrifices and spirit of the patriotic martyrs and to pass them on to future generations,” adding, “Gyeongsangnam-do will engrave that proud history in its heart and strive to show respect and courtesy to national merit recipients and their families.”


In addition to the Chung-hon Tower, 18 cities and counties in the province autonomously held Memorial Day ceremonies suited to their local circumstances.


On the same day, Park Wan-su, the elected governor of Gyeongsangnam-do from the June 1 nationwide local elections and by-elections, and Kim Young-seon, the elected member of the National Assembly for Uichang District, Changwon City, visited the National 3·15 Cemetery to commemorate the day.


Governor-elect Park said, “I will uphold the spirit of the March 15 resistance against injustice and build a righteous Gyeongsangnam-do,” while Assemblyman-elect Kim wrote in the memorial book, “I will carry forward the noble meaning of March 15 and achieve a new era and a unified Korea.”
