[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Dongguk Lee] Ulju-gun, Ulsan is hosting the country’s largest trail running competition, the ‘2022 Ulju Trail Nine Peaks’.

This event was selected in 2020 as part of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism’s ‘Regional Specialized Leisure Sports Tourism Revitalization Project’ and the Korea Tourism Organization’s ‘2021 Regional Specialized International Event’ contest, recognizing its potential.

Furthermore, this year it was chosen for the ‘Regional Specialized Sports Tourism Industry Development Project,’ receiving 1.5 billion KRW in national funding over three years, enabling it to be held as an international-scale competition.

The competition categories include 9 PEAKS (124.1 km), 5 PEAKS (44.4 km), 2 PEAKS (26 km), 1 PEAK (10.8 km), as well as stage races and races accompanied by companion dogs.

All courses start from the Yeongnam Alps Complex Welcome Center and return to the starting point.

The 9 PEAKS course is the longest and most difficult in the country, expected to be very popular among professional enthusiasts seeking extreme challenges and a sense of accomplishment.

The 2 PEAKS and 5 PEAKS courses appeal to the MZ generation who enjoy exercising, the 1 PEAK and kids’ races are for the general public, and the companion dog race offers a special experience to enjoy the mountains with pets. Each course is expected to provide the joy of trail running.

Applications for participation are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis until July 31, and details on how to participate, entry fees, and benefits can be found on the Ulju Trail Nine Peaks website.

A county official stated, “Through this event, we aim to establish the brand image of Korea’s representative mountain tourism destination and grow it into an international mega event by naming it UTNP (Ulju Trail Nine Peaks). We will incorporate local characteristics during the event to offer sights and various enjoyable activities, making it a festival for everyone to enjoy together.”
