[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] Since April, the Yongsan Presidential Office has narrowed down the candidates for its new name to five.

The Presidential Office New Name Committee announced on the 3rd that the five candidates for the new name of the presidential office are 'Gukmin-ui Jip' (House of the People), 'Gukmin Cheongsa' (People's Government Building), 'Min-eum Cheongsa' (People's Voice Government Building), 'Bareun Nuri' (Righteous World), and 'Itaewon-ro 22'. The committee held meetings over two days starting from the 31st of last month to deliberate and decide on the candidate evaluation criteria, candidate selection, and final selection criteria.

The committee also plans to select the final candidates by combining the results of a public preference survey conducted on the Gukmin Saenggakham (People's Thoughts) website from today until the 9th, and the judges' scores at a ratio of 70 to 30. The final decision is scheduled to be confirmed and announced within this month.

According to the committee, among the five candidates, 'Gukmin-ui Jip' implies that the people are the owners of the presidential office and that the office is a space open to all citizens.

'Gukmin Cheongsa' means a public space for the people. Beyond the meaning of 'Cheongsa' as a government office, it also implies listening to (Cheong (聽)) and thinking about (Sa (思)) the people.

'Min-eum Cheongsa' means a government office that listens to the people's voice, Min-eum (民音), symbolizing the commitment to listen to public opinion and strive to put it into practice.

'Bareun Nuri' is a pure Korean word combining 'Bareun' meaning righteous and 'Nuri' meaning world, expressing the people's hope for a fair society.

'Itaewon-ro 22' is derived from the street address of the office. It symbolizes true communication with the people by naming the office after an address shared by all citizens, including the president as one of the people, and also reflects the launch of the new presidential office starting in 2022.

Chairman Kwon Young-geol stated, "It is very meaningful and historic to relocate the presidential office, which has been called 'Gyeongmudae' for 12 years since 1948 and 'Cheongwadae' for over 60 years, and to give the new space a new name." He added, "We will humbly accept the will of the people and do our best until the end to responsibly complete the tasks assigned to the committee."
