Democratic Party Lawmakers Visit Yangsan Police Station to Protest

[Asia Economy Reporter Kang Woo-seok] The police prohibited the protest held by the 'COVID-19 Vaccine Victims' Families Council (Kobaekhoe)' in front of former President Moon Jae-in's private residence in Pyeongsan Village, Yangsan City, Gyeongnam.
On the 2nd, the Yangsan Police Station announced that it denied Kobaekhoe's request to extend the protest in front of former President Moon's residence on the 1st and issued a notice banning the assembly. This is the first time a ban on an assembly was issued before the protest took place.
The police cited Article 8, Paragraph 5 of the Assembly and Demonstration Act, which specifies 'disturbance of privacy in residential areas,' as the basis for the ban. According to this provision, if there is a concern that holding an assembly in a residential area may disturb the peace of privacy, the assembly can be banned or restricted upon the request of residents.
If Kobaekhoe ignores the police's ban notice and proceeds with the assembly, they may face imprisonment for up to two years or a fine of up to 2 million won.
Meanwhile, on the 1st, Democratic Party lawmakers Yoon Gun-young, Han Byung-do, and Yoon Young-chan visited the Yangsan Police Station, criticizing the police's lukewarm response to the assembly and urging active measures. Additionally, 17 Democratic Party lawmakers, including Representative Yoon, issued a statement calling on the Yoon Seok-yeol administration to impose sanctions on the assembly in front of former President Moon's residence.
