Kim Byung-nae, Re-elected Mayor of Gwangju Nam-gu: "I Will Make It the Hottest City Nationwide"

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] Kim Byeong-nae, mayor of Nam-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City, has succeeded in being re-elected for the 8th term of the popular election.


Mayor Kim said, “I deeply thank the residents of Nam-gu who gave overwhelming support and encouragement,” and added, “I will continue to push forward the preparations and plans for the continuous development of Nam-gu without interruption.”


He continued, “I will successfully complete the tasks undertaken as the mayor of Nam-gu during the 7th term of the popular election, and in the 8th term, I will sincerely and passionately respond to each earnest desire of the residents of Nam-gu and open the future of Nam-gu together with them.”


He also explained his plan to make Nam-gu not only an educational hub but also the hottest city nationwide economically and culturally, building the pride of 220,000 residents of Nam-gu.


To this end, he promised ▲completion of the aerial walkway, media facade, media art wall, and street food zone around Baegun Square ▲smooth progress of urban regeneration new deal projects underway in three areas: Yangnim-dong, Sajik-dong, and Bangnim-dong ▲completion of the complex living SOC project ▲successful establishment of Daechon Energy Valley Industrial Complex.


Mayor Kim said, “During the election period, I made efforts to listen to the voices of people working in various fields throughout Nam-gu,” and emphasized, “To realize these wishes for the development of Nam-gu and to get closer and more accessible to residents, I will move the mayor’s office to the first floor and expedite the operation of the ‘Mobile Mayor’s Office.’”


Kim, who served as an administrative officer at the Office of Political Affairs in the Blue House under the Moon Jae-in administration, was born in Yeonggwang, Jeollanam-do. He graduated from Chodae High School and Gwangju University, served as president of the student council at Gwangju University, aide to National Assembly member Kang Woon-tae, head of the Jikso Civil Complaints Office at Gwangju City Hall, and held positions as deputy spokesperson of the Democratic Party of Korea’s central party and vice chairman of the Policy Committee.


In the 7th nationwide simultaneous local elections in 2018, he ran for mayor of Nam-gu, Gwangju, and was elected as the youngest local government head in the Honam region. He succeeded in being re-elected in the 8th nationwide simultaneous local elections in 2022.
