[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunju Lee] In the early vote count of the June 1 local elections for the mayors of Daejeon and Sejong Special Self-Governing City, candidates from the People Power Party are leading in both races.
Since it is still early in the counting process and the three major terrestrial broadcasters' exit polls indicate these areas as highly competitive, the final results remain to be seen.
According to the Central Election Commission's election statistics system, as of 11 PM on the 1st, Lee Jang-woo, the People Power Party candidate for Daejeon mayor, received 37,610 votes, accounting for 51.65% of the vote share. Heo Tae-jung, the Democratic Party candidate, is closely trailing with 35,196 votes (48.34%).
For Sejong mayor, Choi Min-ho of the People Power Party is in first place with 10,116 votes (55.77%), followed by Lee Chun-hee of the Democratic Party with 8,022 votes (44.22%).
