Dongwon Industries Sells MSC-Certified 'Dongwon Tuna Sashimi' at Lotte Mart

[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Eun-mo] Dongwon Industries announced on the 31st that it will sell "Dongwon Chamchihoe," which has obtained sustainable fishery certification from the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), at Lotte Mart from the 1st to the 8th of next month.

The MSC is the most prestigious global non-profit organization in the field of sustainable seafood, established to minimize marine environmental destruction and ensure a stable supply of seafood in the future. The MSC rigorously evaluates the entire fishing process, including marine ecosystem and species protection and compliance with international regulations, before granting MSC certification.

Dongwon Industries was the first domestic seafood company to obtain MSC certification for purse seine and longline fisheries targeting tuna in 2019 and 2020, respectively. Since then, it has introduced various sustainable seafood products using MSC-certified tuna, such as "Dongwon Chamchi Ice Cube," "Dongwon Chamchihoe Eco Label Set," and "Dongwon Chamchihoe."

Dongwon Chamchihoe is a product made from MSC-certified tuna that complies with sustainable fishing methods and production and distribution processes. Yellowfin tuna caught from oceans worldwide is rapidly frozen to maintain freshness. It is available in two types containing yellowfin tuna belly and lean meat, which can be conveniently enjoyed with simple thawing. The "Dongwon Chamchi Assorted Sashimi," consisting of belly and lean meat of tuna freshly prepared on the same day, is also available at a 40% discounted price.

Currently, MSC-certified seafood distributed in the global market accounts for only about 19% of all seafood. However, global companies such as Walmart, Costco, and IKEA are leading the way in expanding the sale of MSC-certified products as a policy, gaining popularity. Dongwon Industries plans to expand consumer awareness of sustainable seafood by producing various high value-added MSC-certified products and expanding sales channels.

Dongwon Chamchihoe uses paper packaging instead of vinyl. The paper packaging, jointly developed over a year by Dongwon Industries and Dongwon Systems, a comprehensive packaging subsidiary of Dongwon Group, features an eco-friendly water-based coating on the surface that protects the contents without damage even in ultra-low temperatures below minus 45°C.

A Dongwon Industries official said, "It is meaningful to participate in this event prepared to expand consumer awareness of sustainable seafood while contributing to stabilizing dining-out prices," adding, "We will continue to lead a sustainable seafood consumption culture and provide premium seafood with reliable quality."

The price of the two types of Dongwon Chamchihoe (yellowfin tuna belly, yellowfin tuna lean meat) is 14,800 KRW for 300g, and Dongwon Chamchi Assorted Sashimi is 15,800 KRW for 300g.
