'Broker' Song Kang-ho Wins Best Actor Award

[Cannes (France) = Asia Economy Reporter Lee Isul] Actor Song Kang-ho won the Best Actor award at this year's Cannes Film Festival.

Song Kang-ho was announced as the Best Actor winner at the closing ceremony of the 75th Cannes Film Festival held at the Lumi?re Theater in Cannes, France, on the 28th at 8:30 PM (local time) for director Hirokazu Kore-eda's film Broker. Upon stepping onto the stage, he greeted the audience in French, saying, "Merci beaucoup (Thank you very much)."

He continued, "I am grateful and honored. To the great artist director Hirokazu Kore-eda. I want to share this joy and honor with Kang Dong-won, Lee Ji-eun, Lee Joo-young, and Bae Doona who worked together. To CEO Lee Yoo-jin and all CJ staff, I sincerely thank you. I also thank my family who are here in the second-floor seats. I dedicate this honor to countless movie fans."

This marks the fourth time an Asian actor has won the Best Actor award at Cannes, following Chinese actor Ge You at the 47th Cannes Film Festival in 1994, Hong Kong's Tony Leung at the 53rd in 2000, and Japan's Y?ya Yagira at the 57th in 2004.

Broker is a film depicting an unexpected special journey of people connected through a baby box. Brokers secretly take the baby away, but the mother, So-young, who left the baby behind, returns. Eventually, the three unintentionally set out together to find new parents for the baby.

In the film, Song Kang-ho plays Sang-hyun, a self-proclaimed benevolent broker who tries to find a suitable guardian for the abandoned baby Woo-sung. Starting with The Host (2006), he has been invited to Cannes seven times with films including Miryang (2007), The Good, the Bad, the Weird (2008), Thirst (2009), Parasite (2019), Emergency Declaration (2021), and Broker. He won the Palme d'Or in 2018 for Parasite. Last year, he served as a jury member at the 74th Cannes Film Festival.
