Suncheon City Supports the Creation of 'Village Museums' Preserving Local History

The Village's Unique Stories Created by the Hands of Residents

Suncheon City Supports the Creation of 'Village Museums' Preserving Local History

[Suncheon=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] Suncheon City, Jeollanam-do announced on the 26th that it is calling for applications for the village museum creation support project sites that record the history of villages and the stories of residents.

This year's village museum creation support project is a program that supports the costs of creating village museums that preserve daily necessities imbued with residents' lives or photos and records related to the village. After confirming the resources and target sites, a total of three locations will be selected, and 15 million KRW will be supported per site.

Village museums can be applied for if a small exhibition space is prepared using shared buildings such as senior citizen centers or village halls, allowing for permanent opening and resident-led operation.

Villages wishing to participate must submit the project application form and resident consent form to the Eup/Myeon/Dong Administrative Welfare Center or Suncheon City Autonomous Innovation Division by the 2nd of next month.

Last year, Sangsang Seojeong Village and Dosa Gyodong Village, which established village museums, collected various resources such as photos from the Japanese colonial period, daily necessities, village documents from the 60s and 70s, and awards through resident workshops to operate the village museums.

Seo-dong Village Museum, which opened in 2018 as Suncheon City's first village museum, also exhibits and operates about 80 resources, attracting benchmarking from village communities nationwide.

A Suncheon City official said, "Villages that possess resources containing the stories of the village are encouraged to participate in the village museum creation project, which allows them to record and preserve the village's history themselves," adding, "We will continue to support village museums to inherit and preserve the unique history and origins of villages and enhance the pride of village residents."
