[Interview] Kang Maenghun, Candidate for Seongdong District Mayor, "I Will Definitely Create 'Tomorrow's City, Great Seongdong'"

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] “During the five years of the Moon Jae-in administration, common sense and principles collapsed, and many citizens shed tears of blood due to unprecedented suffering. In particular, many young people, self-employed workers, small business owners, and low-wage workers suffered from populist policies such as the flawed ‘real estate policy,’ ‘income-led growth,’ and housing policies that fought against the market.”

Kang Maeng-hoon, the People Power Party candidate for Seongdong District Mayor, pointed out these issues with the previous administration in an interview. He continued, “Politics should wipe away the tears of the people. It must lead national development through hope and vision.” He added, “I have worked as an urban engineering expert for 30 years, doing my best to create a livable city. Especially, while earning my master's and doctoral degrees at Hanyang University, I have spent over 10 years growing the dream of sustainable urban development together with Seongdong,” explaining his candidacy for Seongdong District Mayor.

Kang said, “The national economy will revive only when the local economy revives. The development of Seongdong is the development of Korea.” He expressed his passion for Seongdong’s progress, saying, “Based on my experience and know-how, I will set and pursue the right direction to surely develop Seongdong.”

He also promised, “I will always communicate with citizens and become a district mayor who finds solutions for their livelihood. Together with the respected residents, I will create a premium city, Seongdong.”

Regarding the most urgent local issues to be resolved, Kang mentioned ▲ utilization plans for the Sampyo Remicon site ▲ revitalization of the commercial area around Wangsimni Station and traffic congestion problems ▲ support for local talented individuals.

He said, “Once I enter the district office, I will prioritize and address these issues.”

Kang stated, “Based on these three issues, I will create a foundation for future generations’ livelihoods and sustainable growth, secure thoroughfares and key facilities, and form a task force team to attract business, commercial, and cultural facilities based on the ‘Special Act on Station Area Development’ and the ‘Urban Development Act.’”

Additionally, he pledged, “To reduce educational disparities, I will establish an ‘Education Information Center’ where career counseling is available from elementary to university levels, and work with the new superintendent of education to improve systems to attract prestigious high schools.”

Kang appealed for support, describing himself as “the most capable candidate who best understands the field through 30 years of experience as a Seoul city urban housing administrator, with expertise in architectural planning, urban regeneration, housing construction policies, and communication.”

He added, “I will be a ‘working district mayor,’ not a ‘talking district mayor.’ I will be a district mayor who solves problems, not one who creates them. Together with prepared Seoul expert candidate Oh Se-hoon and President Yoon Seok-youl, elected by the people, I will steadily take firm steps toward ‘Tomorrow’s City, Great Seongdong.’ I ask for overwhelming support for Kang Maeng-hoon so that I can calmly implement my pledges in the June 1 local elections.”
