[Asia Economy Reporter Jin-ho Kim] The first NFT artwork realized with LG Display's transparent OLED recently attracted global digital art attention by being auctioned for $6.2 million (approximately 8 billion KRW).
Named "Important Memories of Humanity," the piece is LG Display's first transparent OLED NFT artwork created in collaboration with world-renowned media artist Refik Anadol. It reinterprets data collected from the private spaceflight project Inspiration4 using artificial intelligence.
Inspiration4 is the world's first purely private spaceflight project, led by a U.S. space exploration company, in which four civilians explored Earth's orbit at an altitude of 575 km in September last year.
The artwork visualizes various flight data such as audio, video, and passenger health information from the spacecraft, analyzed and reinterpreted by AI algorithms. The three-dimensional shapes formed by countless colored dots and lines ripple across the screen, expressing humanity's challenge to space.
Reflecting the artist's creative intention to combine cutting-edge technologies represented by spaceflight and transparent OLED, the piece offers a vivid and immersive viewing experience with a hologram effect that appears to float in midair.
Refik Anadol said, "Transparent OLED is a very interesting display for artists because it allows communication with viewers from a new perspective, breaking away from conventional frameworks."
This NFT artwork was recently auctioned for $6.2 million (approximately 8 billion KRW), and the winning bidder will receive the NFT artwork embedded in LG Display's transparent OLED. According to the artist's wishes, 30% of the auction proceeds will be donated to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in the United States.
Currently, LG Display is the only company in the world mass-producing large transparent OLEDs. Transparent OLED maximizes the advantages of OLEDs that emit light by themselves without a backlight. It offers high transparency enough to replace conventional glass windows, is thin and lightweight, and delivers clear image quality.
Jin Min-kyu, Head of Life Display Promotion at LG Display, said, "We will continue to introduce solutions that provide unprecedented new customer experiences with transparent OLED."
