[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Hyun-ji] On the 24th, Kwon Seong-dong, floor leader of the People Power Party, announced that the party is considering recommending candidates for the two vacant ministerial positions following the voluntary resignations of Kim In-cheol, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education nominee, and Jeong Ho-young, Minister of Health and Welfare nominee.

After the floor strategy meeting held at the National Assembly in Yeouido, Seoul, Kwon told reporters, “The authority to appoint Cabinet members is the exclusive right of the President, so I believe the Presidential Office will find suitable talents.” He added, “Since anyone, including the party and the public, can recommend candidates, if there are appropriate recommendations within the party for the Deputy Prime Minister of Education and the Minister of Health and Welfare nominees, we will review and consider recommending them.”

Regarding the Democratic Party’s criticism that Jeong’s voluntary resignation was ‘too late,’ Kwon responded, “As seen during the confirmation hearing, no illegal or improper acts were revealed,” and said, “There were many objections because the nominee did not meet the public’s expectations, so we conveyed to the Presidential Office that it would be difficult to appoint him.” He added, “Due to this process being exposed through the media, Jeong voluntarily resigned. I do not think it was too late.”
