Attended Disaster Risk Reduction Ministerial Meeting... Introduced Domestic Best Practices and Delivered National Statement
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced on the 24th that it will dispatch a government delegation to the '7th Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction,' the largest international conference in the field of disaster safety.
Kim Yong-gyun, the head of the government delegation attending the conference, will participate in the 'Ministerial Roundtable' on the 26th (local time) alongside heads of state and ministers from various countries. He will introduce the Korean government's strategies for securing funding for disaster risk reduction and policies to encourage increased private sector investment, as well as propose policy alternatives for inclusive recovery in the international community.
During this trip, the government delegation will hold high-level meetings with officials from Australia and the ASEAN Secretariat, as well as senior representatives from international organizations such as the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) Special Representative and the Secretary-General of the Asian Disaster Prevention Center. They will discuss cooperation measures for disaster risk reduction and coordinate efforts to ensure effective implementation.
In particular, through high-level talks with the ASEAN Secretariat, plans include discussing the establishment of the Korea-ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Disaster Management in 2022 and ways to enhance joint cooperation on disaster early warning and information and communication technology (ICT)-based disaster response systems.
Kim Seong-ho, head of the Disaster Safety Management Headquarters, stated, “Despite challenging conditions such as COVID-19, we will share the government’s contributions and experiences in faithfully implementing the international framework for disaster risk reduction with the global community and constructively contribute to the discussion agenda. We will identify recent issues related to disaster risk governance strengthening, disaster risk reduction for all, and risk-informed investment and financing, as well as the efforts and systems of member countries, and appropriately utilize them in future policy formulation.”
