"Prosecutors Must Prioritize Human Rights"
Emphasizing Efforts to Gain Public Trust
[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Gyumin] Han Seok-ri, the newly appointed Chief Prosecutor of the Seoul Western District Prosecutors' Office (age 53, Judicial Research and Training Institute class 28), stated in his inaugural speech that he will strive to transform the prosecution into one that faithfully fulfills its fundamental duties.
At the inauguration ceremony of the 23rd Chief Prosecutor of the Seoul Western District Prosecutors' Office held at 9:30 a.m. on the 23rd in the large conference room on the 10th floor of the Seoul Western District Prosecutors' Office, Chief Prosecutor Han said, "It is true that there are many obstacles to investigations, but even under the current system, we must make our best efforts to establish an investigation and sentencing system that can uncover the substantive truth and impose punishments commensurate with crimes."
He continued by emphasizing that the prosecution must respect human rights, stating, "We must carefully listen to the stories of those involved in cases, complainants, and local community residents, even though it may be difficult."
Chief Prosecutor Han stressed the prosecution's kind and humble attitude to gain public trust. He said, "One of the reasons the public distrusts the prosecution is internal corruption. If we listen attentively and show consideration to the parties involved and complainants, they will feel grateful regardless of the outcome, and as these efforts accumulate, the public will come to trust the prosecution."
Finally, Chief Prosecutor Han called for the establishment of an organizational culture of harmony and communication. He stated, "(The prosecution) is an organization composed of various job groups such as prosecutors, investigators, administrative staff, and drivers. We must become a flexible prosecution that opens ears and hearts to each other, listens well to difficulties and hardships, and respects and accepts diverse opinions."
