[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Dae-yeol] The Korean-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry announced that, together with Mercedes-Benz Korea and BMW Group Korea, it held the graduation ceremony for the first class of the ‘Ausbildung’ program on the 20th. Ausbildung is a German-style dual vocational education and training program designed to help Korean youth start long-term careers. The three organizations first introduced the program in Korea in 2017 through joint consultation.
The domestic program focuses on the automotive maintenance field, called Auto Mechatronica. It is a three-year curriculum combining 70% practical training at companies and 30% theoretical education at schools. The graduation ceremony was attended by 54 first-class trainees, 35 trainers, brand and dealer representatives, and professors from domestic partner universities.
Trainees hired in 2017 officially signed contracts with German automobile brand dealers and have been receiving salaries since joining the program. They followed an educational curriculum developed through cooperation between professional trainers and university professors. Graduates received the Ausbildung certificate issued by the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry, a brand-specific certificate from the respective brand, and an associate degree from a domestic partner university.
Thomas Klein, CEO of Mercedes-Benz Korea, said, "As a partner coexisting with Korean society, we are proud to have nurtured excellent automotive professionals since the first year of the Ausbildung program’s introduction in Korea in 2017," and pledged continued support. Bernhard Terrier, Vice President of BMW Group Korea, stated, "We will do our best to provide sustainable educational opportunities so that more students can dream of a better future."
