[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Seongdong-gu has completed the installation of 19 ‘Small Smart Shelters’ and officially began operation on the 20th.
The ‘Small Smart Shelter’ is a model containing only the essential functions of the ‘Seongdong-type Smart Shelter,’ which Seongdong-gu introduced nationwide for the first time. Equipped with features such as heating and cooling and public WiFi, it is about 41% (5.94㎡) the size of the existing smart shelters, making it possible to install in smaller spaces.
The ‘Seongdong-type Smart Shelter’ not only ensures safety from heatwaves, cold waves, and fine dust but also resolves various inconveniences experienced during daily public transportation use, such as during rain. With a user satisfaction rate of 94% (December 2021) and high demand for expanded installation, the district developed the ‘Small Smart Shelter’ that can be installed even in narrow spaces.
Accordingly, earlier this year, a ‘Small Smart Shelter’ was pilot-installed at a village bus stop near Seongdong-gu Office. The district conducted interviews and monitoring with users and actively reflected the collected opinions in the additional ‘Small Smart Shelters’ to be installed.
In addition to installing bus information terminals that provide mobile phone and wired/wireless charging and bus arrival information, the interior was designed with wood inspired by Seoul Forest, playing healing music for a comfortable experience, enhancing user comfort.
In particular, the district collaborated with Seongdong Police Station to prioritize installation locations in high-crime areas. Following the installation of remote monitoring intelligent CCTV for abnormal behavior detection, emergency bells were installed inside. When the emergency bell is pressed in a dangerous situation, it connects to the district’s smart integrated control center and immediately calls the police, allowing the smart shelter to serve as an emergency refuge in various crime occurrences.
Since its initial operation in August 2020, the ‘Seongdong-type Smart Shelter’ has surpassed 2.3 million cumulative users as of May 2022. It was selected as the most satisfying project among smart inclusive city policies chosen by Seongdong residents in 2020 (30.8%) and was designated as a ‘Lighthouse City’ for the smart solution expansion project by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport in May.
A Lighthouse City is a term from the European Union (EU)’s joint smart city project ‘Smarter Together,’ referring to a city that plays a leading role in experimenting with various smart city technologies, including innovative technologies that provide direct convenience to residents’ lives, on a large scale and spreading them to other cities.
With a total of 47 smart shelters installed throughout Seongdong-gu, including 28 ‘Seongdong-type Smart Shelters’ and 19 ‘Small Smart Shelters,’ providing high convenience to public transportation users including the transportation vulnerable, the district plans to continue building a dense transportation infrastructure and implement transportation policies that can be universally enjoyed.
