[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunseok Yoo] A teenage mother who abandoned a newborn baby in a garbage bag has turned herself in to the police.
On the 19th, the Dongdaemun Police Station in Seoul identified the mother, A, of the newborn found with the umbilical cord attached at a garbage sorting site in an apartment complex in Dongdaemun-gu, and is conducting a non-custodial investigation.
It is known that Ms. A voluntarily came to the police earlier this week to surrender. The police requested an autopsy from the National Forensic Service to determine the exact time of death. A police official stated, "The charges will be specified after further investigation."
According to the police and fire authorities, a report was received on the 13th at 6:24 a.m. about a newborn baby found at a garbage sorting site in an apartment complex in Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul.
The deceased baby was discovered by an employee of a cleaning service company while collecting garbage bags and loading them onto a vehicle. It is reported that the bag had torn and its contents spilled out, among which was the naked body of the baby with the umbilical cord still attached.
The fire authorities responded to the report and checked the baby's condition, but the baby was already deceased.
